Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
